Rex Warner was born in Birmingham and was raised in the bucolic splendour of the Cotswold Hills, his father a clergyman, his mother a teacher. Winning a scholarship to Oxford, Warner developed an odd mix of intellectual intensity and rugged rusticism, which would inform his writing throughout his life.
